Can Jami also be used as a SIP-PhoneClient

Im looking for a Skype Alternative and found Jami.
It’s easy to use - great job.
I read some Articles here about SIP-Integration
I registered my SIP Account Information - worked well.
But haven’t understood - can i make calls from jami to classic phone numbers or CellPhones (not Jami Clients on the other side) over my sip-Accounting?
And if so, where can i find a numberpad or a “classic” PhoneClient-FrontEnd?
Thanks to everybody

Yes, you can make calls from Jami to classic phone numbers and cell phone numbers.

Note: It is required that your SIP provider support PSTN (public switched telephone network) numbers.

  1. In Jami, select the SIP account you wish to use to make the telephone call.
  2. In the Search field (in the top left), type the desired classic phone number or cell phone number.
  3. Click the “Start audio call” button.

Hope this helps.

As of 2023, operators worldwide are in the process of retiring support for both last-mile analog telephony and ISDN, and transitioning voice service to Voice over IP via Internet access delivered either via DSL, cable modems or fiber-to-the-premises, eliminating the expense and complexity of running two separate technology infrastructures for PSTN and Internet access.

Service retirement

In the United Kingdom, the copper POTS and ISDN-based PSTN is being retired in favour of SIP telephony, with an original completion date of December 2025, although this has now been put back to January 2027. See United Kingdom PSTN switch-off. Voice telephony will continue to follow the E.163 and E.164 standards, as with current mobile telephony, with the interface to end-users remaining the same.

Several other European countries, including Estonia, Germany, Iceland, the Netherlands, Spain and Portugal, have also retired, or are planning to retire, their PSTN networks.[7][8][9]

Countries in other continents are also performing similar transitions.

I have tried with the latest version, but there is no numberpad as far as I know, or it is hidden. To do a call, you have to create a new contact and enter the phone number you want to call as the contact name. In the end, you have a list of contacts which is a list of numbers… totally UI nonsense. And then, you can do a call as you select a contact, just like you would do with a normal Jami contact.

Also, the integration SIP / Jami is not optimal. They are two different accounts in the same application. You have to switch to the account you want to use, either Jami contacts or SIP phone number contacts. For this, click on your icon on top left and select the account you want to use: the contact list changes accordingly.

Hi Pierre, thank you a lot for your information & time.

Hello Pierre, when I am connected to my JAMI sip account, I can receive incoming calls on my phone. However, if I switch to my non-sip JAMI account, I noticed that my incoming calls do not ring on JAMI. Is this behavior to be expected? I am using JAMI on an iPhone. -Mic

I don’t know as the SIP configuration on my phone is not reliable and it loses the connection to the SIP server frequently. I haven’t found the time to tune the settings and I don’t use it much on the phone.
