Question from WeiHua Liu: “There is an option to stop receiving attachments automatically based on file size. But how can I auto-remove outdated attachments from conversations completely?”
Source of his question at https://alternativeto.net/software/ring/about/#post-95082
Hello WeiHua Liu, I do not know how to auto-remove outdated attachments from conversations completely. Here are my three suggested options to resolve this challenge:
-
Option 1
Ask your question at this present free Jami support forum in English at: Support in English - Jami Forum
-
Option 2
Search the free Jami documentation :
- Homepage at:
- Chinese at 主页 — Jami 文档
- English at Home — Jami documentation
- Page about “File Transfer”:
- Chinese at 文件转移 — Jami 文档
- English at File transfer — Jami documentation
-
Option 3
Using Jami configuration, find the location of the folder where the attachement files are stored at. Using an external file browser to your liking, find that folder. Move, delete, or archive the file(s) to any other location to your liking. The file will still show within Jami as attached to a message. But they will not use storage space on the external folder. Alternatively, using Jami configuration, you can chose any other folder location to your liking. Including another drive.
Hello, thank you for your kind reply.
I have already tried searching the user forums; however, I haven’t found a satisfactory answer. On devices with limited storage capacity (such as smartphones), attachments in this software tend to accumulate over time.
It is not difficult to make a shell script on desktop operating systems to automatically clean up. However, on Android, the application data is protected by the operating system. Because of this, I have also considered developing the software plugin.

@drliu1202 Good idea to contribute a plug-in (extension) for Jami.
You probably already saw the documentation below. If not, those might be of interest for your plug-in:
If needed, both me and the Ubertus team would be happy to contribute beta testing your plug-in. As volunteers.
