Is DHT Proxy option preferred?

So ever since my wife got a new phone a month ago we have had issues using Jami. Not receiving messages etc. One thing I found is Android was managing the application to prevent battery consumption. Disabled that and it HAD NO EFFECT. Still had issues.

Today I told her to disable the DHT proxy and all the sudden we can communicate with no issues. No I thought DHT was a requirement honestly. I am wondering if someone can clear up this DHT proxy option. Is it not neccesary? What are the pros and cons of using the DHT proxy?

Thanks,
