MPEG2 support and VAAPI

I’m curious if this has been considered.

There is quite a bit of hardware still in use that offers hardware acceleration only for MPEG2 video decoding through VAAPI. At the same time generally decoding/encoding MPEG2 video takes less CPU cycles. The tradeoff would be that this requires more bandwidth, but we do typically have more bandwidth at our disposal now.

Especially devices like the Libreboot X200 would possibly benefit from MPEG2 support. Would it be hard to add this? Do you think it would indeed enable video calls on older hardware, reducing the CPU load?
