Windows, big issues with sound

Thanks ovari for the version location :+1:t2:

So I have Build ID: 202509301457

NOW: GOOD NEWS!!!

It finaly works!

I checked several things, and what I spotted and changed is the output format for my usb dac/amplifier, I set it to the same format (24 bits, 48khz) as the internal sound card (so it matches the other computer default settings, both soundcard and webcam mic).

And now the sound is clear, the kind of saturation is gone! Even if commuting both webcams resolution to full hd.

→ This is great news. I guess thus that Jami itself cannot do format conversion (resampling)?

2nd question, important for group call (3 participants and above) → does it mean that all participants must have the same format (I guess it’s more the frequency than bits# that is important)?
It would mean that everybody needs to be in 48khz, for both webcam mic and sound outputs.

PS: I did a donation now, will see later for my family. I’m happy that it finaly works!

… and you don’t have to continue with Microsoft Windows.

Our operating system is Linux Mint Cinnamon edition.

Someone we communicate with used Jami on Microsoft Windows. The call experience was less than ideal. After upgrading their operating system from Windows to Linux Mint, the call experience in audio-only and video calls has worked flawlessly.

We have also had audio-only and video group calls with three computers all running Linux Mint Cinnamon edition, and the calls worked flawlessly.

One of the members in the group has a dual boot with Windows and Linux Mint. Jami does not perform as well with Windows as with Linux Mint. If this is due to “embrace, extend, and extinguish” (EEE), used internally by Microsoft, it is beyond the scope of any software development team to fix.

A possible solution is to upgrade to a better operating system like Linux Mint. You can also have a look at the End of 10 site for more information.

Thank you.

Should your solution be added to the following page.

I know linux mint, I installed it on 2 tablets that I use for listening to music (with JRiver).

BUT: I can’t switch to linux on my main computer. I have many many softwares (sound, video, pict treatment…) that simply don’t exist on linux. I have so many interests and many workflows that it would be a HUGE migration. I don’t have so much energy and time, required for looking for, evaluating and then migrating data, adapting my workflows. It would take months… It’s just impossible for me.
Same for my family, they don’t have time for switching and I also can’t support them for all this.

Unfortunately, linux migration is not so smooth for all users (my parents are almost 80s… Just a simply change in UI take a lot of time…).

My partner is on linux mint since > 6 months. Even if I did software programming, there’s a very annoying bug with the printer spooler and I still couldn’t fix it. When there’s such an issue, it can quickly become an headache for someone who doesn’t know about linux. I noticed it’s the big lottery with drivers. Generally it works well, but when an hardware has some issues on linux, it can be also hours of investigations (and in the end it’s not sure that it will work).

I’m of course much better fan of linux that ms regarding privacy.

Just unfortunately, the answer “simply migrate to linux”, which is more and more written since the end of win 10 support, is not the answer for all situations, it’s not the magical solution; the context has to be checked globally.

But for Jami, as I wrote above, now it works for my situation.

I’d just like to know about my above questions, to be sure that I can recommend Jami for the rest of my family (without spending as much time as I did with my father, I cannot afford it in these days).

If this issue is not known/documented yet, of course you may add in the FAQ that if there’s a sound issue, setting the same sound format (frequencies at least, added to the stereo/multichannel criteria) could solve the issue :+1:t2:

I would like to know if in general, on windows, Jami doesn’t manage resampling (or if there are known bugs linked to the “portaudio” manager).

  1. to know if this needs to be configured properly for my whole family to be able to use Jami

  2. for you to document it properly in the FAQ

BTW, I don’t know when I’ll have time, but when possible I’ll install Jami and create an account for my partner’s laptop which is on linux mint (22 yet).
Thus I’ll be able to make some crossplatform (win←>linux) further checks regarding this sound issue.

The FAQ documentation has been updated in the following link.

Please advise any additional improvements to the FAQ.

Sorry, I do not know the answer to your resampling question. Someone else may be able to answer.

Hi,

In the FAQ, I suggest that you replace “, added to the stereo/multichannel criteria” (which was a reference I did about the issue with soundcard set to multichannel. Someone reading the FAQ won’t have the context and will not understand what it means) by “for example

so that the final part in parenthesis becomes:
(48 kHz sampling frequency with a 24‑bit depth for example)

@ssebs, can you please review the following patch?
